As you approach the New Village Tearooms in Orton, the aroma and atmosphere will draw you in. There is nothing like the scent of fresh baking to make a tearooms a wonderful place to visit and enjoy. Our very friendly staff will be delighted to help you choose from our sumptuous selection of savoury and sweet dishes all made on the premises. We endeavour to source our ingredients locally and have a proud reputation that brings visitors from all over the country to enjoy our food and drinks. The tea room was once the kitchen of the old 18th century cottage and still retains echoes of the past that add to the experience; although we have modernised the facilities, we have remained true to the architecture and style of the building.
We have won numerous awards, the most notable of which, The Award of Excellence has been given to us for the past three years running. We are also in the AA Teapot Trail Guide and are awarded members of the Tea Guild. With recipes from bygone times, innovative new dishes and a mouth-watering selection of teas, there will be something for everyone to enjoy at The New Village Tearooms. The location couldn’t be any more perfect, Orton is a picture-postcard Lake District Village of incredible character and we are at the heart of it.
Nearby Orton Scar still stands guard over this ancient and attractive village, its beacon was lit in past times as a warning signal of Scottish border raiders. The history of this area is a stark contrast to the peace of today. Bridges cross the two village brooks that wrap themselves around the pretty central green. Historic 17th and 18th century cottages, white washed and original stone colours paint a beautiful vista. In the green itself, there still stands the old wooden village stocks as a reminder from the rugged and war torn past.
All Saints Church is a striking landmark too, built of stone in 1293 on a knoll, it is thought to have once had a central tower. Years of restoration though have not touched its large 16th century west tower, meant for defence in the border raids. The tower houses a peel of eight bells that ring out in true village style at events throughout the year. At Orton farmers market, today’s farmers gather with other growers, producers and artisan craftsmen to offer a tremendous variety of high quality and speciality local produce and crafts. This fascinating event is honoured by many awards and held on the second Saturday of every month from 9.30am to 2.30 pm; throughout the year and whatever the weather. There is even live music, street entertainers and special events.
Whether you are visiting for a day or holidaying in the area, Orton is a village with a rich history and warm welcome. The New Village Tearooms are an important part of this village and have been for many years, we do hope you will join us and let us spoil you with delights from the area.
